Dear George. Thanks for the new info, I'll put the new bits on the db asap. There are 41 entries on the db mentioning Mincing Lane, 32 of these are sugar brokers, 11 operating out of London Commercial Sale Rooms (Nos. 13, 17, 16, 22, 3, 14, 18, 56, 12, 15). 17 are of Mincing Lane (Nos 37, 36, 8, 5, 7, 13, 4, 16, 9, 11, 30). Surely these have to be business premises rather than dwellings. Most of our entries come from the directories of Kent 1817 and Pigot 1839. We suspect that the first refinery in London was in Mincing Lane abt 1554, so there's a bit of history there. As to a 'sworn' sugar broker.... I have no idea. Either salesman's hype, or perhaps there was some sort of registration of brokers, as there were problems with the importing of sugar from various sources including illegal ones. I'll try to find out more. Many thanks. Bryan. Bryan Mawer, Wellingborough, UK Sugar Refiners & Sugarbakers Database - www.mawer.clara.net
